Zack's new record "A Bird in the Hand" comes from experimentation with voice and fuzz that took place against the backdrop of burning out as a social worker during the pandemic and moving from Brooklyn to Texas to care for his father. "A Bird in the Hand" documents a journey of transformation and healing.
Zack loves to make music with guitarist Ryan Ferreira and bassist Chris Tordini. As a trio they played several shows together in 2018-2019 as 'Heavy Lettuce.' Four songs on the record ("Nooch Lady," "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush," "Flavor Heat," and "Bodo Beya") feature this trio. "Inward" and "Outward" are fully improvised 'duets' with Ryan Ferriera. On these two tracks, Zack sings with his fuzz rig into Ryan’s Eventide H9000 effects processor. Ryan processes/ modulates Zack's voice in real-time, creating unique vocal landscapes. The album closes with a voice and guitar duet called "Analog Sun." Zack sings wordlessly throughout the record.
"A Bird in the Hand" is a foray into the possibilities open to the human voice as an instrument. It is the first record Zack has released features both his original material and the wordless sounds that are most true for him. Zack's fuzz sound is greatly inspired by guitarist David Torn, a sound pioneer who has influenced generations of musicians. Zack considers his music to be in the lineage of Houston pianist Dave Catney who died tragically in 1994 at age 33. Dave showed Zack the way, and Zack wishes for his music to be a continuation for Dave. "A Bird in the Hand" is an offering of gratitude to parents, teachers, friends, and numerous beings who give guidance and support along the path.
